Poison’s opening night sold out in less than a day. The producers had managed to create a promotional frenzy worthy of a rock concert. Penn and the rest of the costume makers had stayed late every night for the past two weeks making sure the costumes were gorgeous and fit everyone perfectly. The dress rehearsals had been a success – costume changes were timed flawlessly so that there was no chance of someone walking back on stage without their trousers or missing a shoe.

Penn watched from backstage as the show started. He tried to keep out of the way, but wanted to have a good view, so he moved to a small nook to the left of the stage and bumped into Adam who was already there.

“What are you doing here?” Penn whispered.

“I’m watching the show,” Adam said, raising an eyebrow as if it was plainly obvious what he was doing.

“Everyone else is in the audience,” Penn pointed out. The actors from Of Kids and Monsters had all gotten tickets to see the show, as well as most of the other theatre staff who weren’t working tonight.

“You’re not,” Adam said with a smirk, weaving his arms around Penn’s waist.

Penn knew Adam well enough by now to recognise when he didn't want to talk about something that hurt him in some way. He wasn’t that guy – the guy that would complain when things didn’t turn out the way he wanted or when the people he cared about acted like assholes.

Penn knew for a fact that Jared was in the audience and there was no empty seat next to him for Adam.

All Penn wanted to do was hug Adam back and tell him that it would be OK; that Jared would forgive him some day. Instead, he turned in his arms, rested his head on Adam's chest, and watched the show.
